Our commitment

Swanwick Bible Weekends is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children and young people who attend our events. Every child has the right to attend an event where they are safe, valued, and protected.

We take all reasonable steps to ensure that children and young people are safe while in our care, and that any concerns about their welfare are handled promptly and appropriately.

Scope

This policy applies to all committee members, session leaders, helpers, and volunteers who work with children and young people at Swanwick Bible Weekends. It covers all children under the age of 18.

"Children's sessions" at Swanwick include crèche provision, junior sessions, and youth activities for attendees up to age 16.

Responsibilities of those working with children

All adults working directly with children and young people at Swanwick:

• Have been known to the Christadelphian community and recommended by their home ecclesia • Operate in visible, open environments — never in one-to-one unsupervised settings • Are expected to treat all children with dignity, respect, and care • Must not use inappropriate language, physical contact, or behaviour • Must report any concerns about a child's welfare immediately to the Secretary or a senior committee member

The 7 Swanwick Rules

All attendees — including young people — are expected to abide by the 7 Swanwick Rules, which include specific provisions for the safety of all attendees:

• No one under the age of 18 is to leave the conference site alone without prior permission from a parent or guardian and a committee member • Boys are not permitted in girls' bedrooms, and girls are not permitted in boys' bedrooms, at any time • Bed times and quietness in corridors are to be respected

Parents and guardians retain responsibility for their children throughout the weekend and must make the committee aware of any welfare concerns.

Reporting concerns

Any person — attendee, parent, helper, or committee member — who has a concern about the welfare of a child at Swanwick should:

1. Report the concern immediately to Tim Morgan (Secretary) or another senior committee member 2. Not investigate the matter themselves or inform the person about whom the concern has been raised 3. Where there is immediate risk of harm, contact the emergency services (999) without delay

All concerns will be taken seriously, recorded in confidence, and referred to the appropriate statutory authorities if necessary.

Safer recruitment

Swanwick Bible Weekends takes care in selecting those who lead and assist with children's sessions. Those working in a sustained, supervised capacity with children are known members of the Christadelphian community. Where appropriate, DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) checks are sought in line with current guidance.

Photography and images

Photography of children at Swanwick events is permitted only by parents and guardians of children attending. General photography of group activities for personal use is acceptable, but any images shared publicly or used for promotional purposes must not identify individual children without the explicit consent of their parents or guardians.

Review

This policy is reviewed annually by the Swanwick Bible Weekends committee. It was last reviewed in April 2026.
